This free GPA to percentage calculator converts any grading scale — 4.0, 4.33, 5.0 and 10-point — into a percentage, and back again. Unlike single-formula converters, it ships the official method for each system: HEC's band rule for Pakistan (4.0 scale), the CBSE ×9.5 formula and the CBCS (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula for India, a UK degree-class reading for British percentages, and an honest label on what credential evaluators like WES actually accept. Pick your direction, your scale and your method — the page shows every step of the working, free, no sign-up, works on any device.
Key facts
- There is no single universal conversion. The right formula depends on your scale and country — a 4.0 GPA, a 10-point CGPA and a UK percentage convert by different rules.
- Pakistan (HEC): the official rule is the minimum of the band — HEC's own example: CGPA 3.00 → 71% (not 75%). The ×25 shortcut is an estimate, not the official number.
- India: CBSE prescribes grade point × 9.5; the UGC/CBCS formula is (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. They give different answers — this tool computes both.
- Study abroad: no credential evaluator publishes a universal GPA↔percentage formula — evaluators apply their own tables. Treat any self-conversion as indicative, and say which method you used.
- UK degrees read from the percentage: First ≥70, Upper Second (2:1) 60–69, Lower Second (2:2) 50–59, Third 40–49.

How to convert GPA to percentage
The procedure is the same every time — what changes is the formula, and the formula depends on your system:
- Find your scale. A 4.0 scale (most of the world), 4.33 (common in Canada), 5.0 (some US high schools) or a 10-point scale (India).
- Pick the method your system prescribes. Pakistan → HEC band method. India CBSE → ×9.5. India university (CBCS) → (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Anywhere else, or in a hurry → linear.
- Convert. Type your number into the tool above and read the working — never trust a converter that hides its formula.
- For percentage → GPA, pick the reverse. HEC's piece-wise reverse formula for Pakistan; the linear division for estimates; CBCS reverse for India.
Which formula does each country use?
| System | Scale | GPA → % formula | % → GPA formula |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pakistan (HEC) | 4.0 | Band minimum (e.g. 3.00 → 71%) | Piece-wise band formula |
| US / international | 4.0 | (GPA ÷ 4) × 100 | % ÷ 25 |
| Canada / some US schools | 4.33 | (GPA ÷ 4.33) × 100 | % ÷ 23.09 |
| Some US high schools | 5.0 | (GPA ÷ 5) × 100 | % ÷ 20 |
| India (CBSE) | 10-point | CGPA × 9.5 | % ÷ 9.5 |
| India (UGC / CBCS) | 10-point | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | (% ÷ 10) + 0.75 |
| United Kingdom | percentage | — (native scale) | No official mapping |
Worked examples (every step shown)
Example 1 — Pakistani student, CGPA 3.50 on the 4.0 scale
- Linear: (3.50 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 87.50%
- HEC band: 3.50 sits in the 3.34–3.67 (A−) band → 80% (the band's minimum)
- The gap is 7.5 percentage points — which is why the method matters. On a Pakistani form, use 80%.
Example 2 — Indian student, CGPA 8.2 on the 10-point scale
- CBSE: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.90%
- CBCS: (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.50%
- Linear: (8.2 ÷ 10) × 100 = 82.00%
- Three official-ish numbers for one CGPA — use the one your board or university names.
Example 3 — Canadian scale, GPA 3.2 on 4.33
- Linear: (3.2 ÷ 4.33) × 100 = 73.90% → UK reading: First-Class Honours
Example 4 — Reverse: 78% to GPA on the 4.0 scale (Pakistan)
- HEC reverse: 78% falls in the 70–79 band → 2.88 + (78 − 70) × 0.036 = 2.88 + 0.288 = 3.17
- Linear: 78 ÷ 25 = 3.12 — close here, but the gap widens near band edges
Quick lookup: 4.0 GPA → percentage
| GPA (4.0) | Linear % | HEC band % (Pakistan) |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00 | 100.00 | 85 |
| 3.67 | 91.75 | 85 |
| 3.50 | 87.50 | 80 |
| 3.33 | 83.25 | 75 |
| 3.00 | 75.00 | 71 |
| 2.67 | 66.75 | 71 |
| 2.33 | 58.25 | 64 |
| 2.00 | 50.00 | 61 |
| 1.67 | 41.75 | 61 |
| 1.00 | 25.00 | 50 |
| 0.00 | 0.00 | — (fail) |
What about WES and study-abroad applications?
5 mistakes other converters make
- Teaching ×25 as the official rule. It is a shortcut. Pakistan's HEC uses band minimums — 3.00 → 71%, not 75%. Pages that print "×25 = official" are wrong for Pakistani students.
- One formula for every country. The CBSE ×9.5 and CBCS (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formulas exist precisely because a flat division misdescribes Indian grading. A converter with no country logic is a calculator, not a guide.
- No reverse mode. Many "GPA to percentage" pages can't go the other way — yet scholarship forms ask for both. This page converts in both directions.
- Hiding the working. If a page shows only the answer, you can't check it — or defend it on a form. Every result here prints its formula.
- Inventing evaluator mappings. Tables labelled "WES conversion" with no source are fiction. This page refuses to print one and tells you why.
FAQs
Is multiplying GPA by 25 the official way to convert to percentage?
No. Multiplying by 25 is a quick linear estimate. In Pakistan, HEC's official rule is the minimum of the grade band — so CGPA 3.00 converts to 71%, not 75%. Use ×25 only as an estimate, and use the HEC band method on Pakistani applications.
Which percentage should I write on a scholarship application form?
Use the method your awarding system prescribes: HEC band method for Pakistani degrees, CBSE ×9.5 or CBCS formula for Indian degrees, linear otherwise. If the form names no method, use the linear number and write the method beside it (e.g. "87.5% — linear conversion of 3.50/4.0") so the reviewer can reproduce it.
What is the CBSE ×9.5 rule?
CBSE prescribes that a student's overall percentage equals their grade point multiplied by 9.5 — so a CGPA of 8.2 becomes 77.9%. It applies to CBSE's 10-point grading, not to university CBCS grading, which uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 instead.
Can I convert a UK percentage to a US GPA?
There is no official mapping between UK percentages and the US 4.0 GPA scale. Approximate tables exist (roughly: 70%+ ≈ 4.0, 65–69 ≈ 3.7, 60–64 ≈ 3.3, 55–59 ≈ 3.0), but treat them as estimates. This tool gives the UK degree-class reading of any percentage, which is what British employers and universities actually use.
Will WES accept the percentage this calculator gives me?
WES and other credential evaluators apply their own conversion tables to your original transcript — they don't certify numbers from online converters. Use this tool to understand your standing and to fill forms that ask for a conversion, but always be ready to supply the original GPA transcript as the authoritative record.
